The reason is to stop phising attacks from live links on the forum.
If you cut and paste a web address contained in a post into your URL browser then that will be the site you end up at. If you click a live hyperlink it is possible the hyperlink has been corrupted to take you to a completely different site.

To be fair, you could make that laughing smilie on the end of Mr_Bumps post a link to whatever type of unsavory material you wished fairly easily if you so wished

All valid points - the op was about live links.
Raising security awareness is about getting people to not click live links as a matter of course. How many people here check the real destination of the URL before they click it?
