Superb shot Mike  what lens did you use for that?

Cheers Darren and all , I used a Nikon 70-200mm vr lens with a 1.7 teleconverter to get the shot, she was standing on a small hillock which meant she was about eye level with the top of our vehicle. Our vehicle was a long wheel base land cruiser with a lift up roof and the lion was about 40 feet away.

that lion is my new desktop backgorund, great shot, look at the concentation and intent in her eyes

Cheers Gary, I'm pleased you like the shot and even more pleased that it conveys the intensity of that animals concentration, it was a privilage to watch her.

Excellent shot and good example of classic compositional techniques, the pylon on the thirds and the wires on the diagonal

Thanks Mike... as you say, prime example of The Rule Of Thirds for those just getting into it. If i'd just taken a shot of the pilons straight on and filling the frame there would have been nothing interesting. Not saying this is a great shot but the rule of thirds comes iinto play and opens up a tiny bit more interest :)

The answer is in the title, "touchdown" the dust is covering the troops nearest the helicopter and simply hasn't reached the photographer yet.

A brilliant, slightly surreal photo taken in the right place at the right time.

You might want to try "panning" when taking a shot like this. It will blur the background and keep the main focus of the image more in focus...

Read this for more info on succesful panning:

Not sure if the cement works were used for that or not....seem to recall from my childhood days going over to Tangmere Airfield once and seeing the Darlek's over there....don't know if they were filming or not.

As for the garage, I've found out that its a listed building, so I should think it would be pretty tricky to get planning permission, although I'm sure it would be possible if someone had the time/money/patience :)

Hi Reece,

Lovely work on your photos. In some of your landscape shots the horizon is not very straight but apart from that there brill mate. Lovely saturation of colours but the pic that stands out for me is The white cliffs of dover. Thats a corker of a pic.

Thanks for your comments Mark. I have a good camera(Eos 350D) but usually use just the auto settings. Not thick but my passion is carp angling, not photography.
On the day in question I think I had the camera set on program to allow me to use AI servo, as I was chasing around after junior and shooting in bursts. The second shot was done by setting son off and running ahead and panning and firing. Any advice gratefully recieved.

not the best shot on here by a long way but i was happy with the way it came out... shooting into the sun was hard to balance the shutter speed and the fstops to get the detail i wanted... had to ask her to ride past a few times...

Right then guys.....

Not quite a ND filter, but a piece of shade 10 welding glass  Yep, this piece of welding glass costs 1 from your local welding supplies place....and basically does the same job as a 10-stop ND filter which can cost 80 for one made by B&W (probably over 100 for a Lee filter). I then purchased a Cokin P Series adapter ring and superglued the glass to the ring and hey presto...I have the equivalent of a 10-stop ND filter for the princely sum of 12

The shot itself was an 'experiment' that turned out rather well. The welding glass creates a strong green colour cast, so ideally you need to set a custom white balance before you take the shot; I'd never done this before but managed to do it by following a youtube tutorial. Alternatively, you can shoot in RAW and correct the colour in post processing.

The exposure was 60secs at f8 and the camera was in bulb mode to achieve this exposure.

I then tried a different processing technique which I'd never used before....a duo-tone consisting of a blackish colour and a bluey kind of colour. A slight curves adjustment, a bit of a crop and a straighten (the only thing done to the horizon), a touch of dodging & burning, a slight vignette and then a sharpen...et voila

Off to get some welding glass it is! :D

Did you cut it to size yourself?

I've experimented with low(ish) shutter speeds myself, but the lack of an ND filter limits the length I can use without over-exposing the picture, so shooting at night and dusk has worked OK for me, these ones came out best...

Sorry for taking a while to get back to you on this, been on holiday

Its best to have the glass tight to the front of the lens to prevent light leak as that is a killer for long exposures. When I first got the glass it did fit into my Cokin filter holder so I gave it a try but the resulting shot had loads of lens flare all over it...not good!

Small row of shops is to the left of the bridge. Shame the river is going downhill. Public stretches are rarely fished and the banks are a state. The few club stretches are well looked after, just a shame that the fishing is poor, to say the least. A real shame.

As a point and shoot person, after seeing some of the pictures id like to learn more about digital photography. Can anyone recommend some reading material?

I'm sure that someone will recommend the best books but I'd say read whatever you can. There are some good monthly magazines available in your local newsagents, I get "Digital Photo" whenever I remember, for just under a fiver. These magazines have lots of tutorials and tips that you can try out, and a DVD with experts explaining how to do it in detail.

A lot of the excercises involve the use of Photoshop or Photoshop Elements which is cheaper and perfect for beginner/intermediate snapper.

I'd recommend any digital photographer to get familiar with the basics of Photoshop or Elements because this opens up a whole new dimension to photography.
I'm not saying you should start messing with digital effects but learn how to brighten and enhance your pics using levels, sharpen and crop. It's very easy to learn the basics and your photos will benefit from it.

A fast shutter speed is the key to success when snapping moving objects like dogs because it reduces the effects of camera shake.

If your camera has a sport setting or similar use that because the autofocus will track the moving object once locked on.

Choose days with good light for best chances of success because you will get faster shutter speed, shoot with the sun to your back so the subject is well lit. If you can't get fast enough shutter speeds bump up your ISO setting.

You should get better results when shooting side-on to the dog because the focal distance will not be changing, pan your camera to match the speed of the dog and use the multiple exposure setting, take as many shots as you can.

Keep the best and dump the rest

Some of you on here might be able to help me on this one.
Iv'e recently moved into the 20th century and purchased a digital camera, a Canon Powershot S3 IS.
I'm reasonably happy with it but comparing the photos to my old ones taken using an Olympus OM10 35mm they definatley dont have the sharpness or overall picture quality.
Could it be the printer as im using Premium Plus photographic paper, any ideas guys or have I brought a duff camera?

Darren1978
01-12-2009, 20:46
It could be that the in-camera settings are different. Cameras have a certain amount of 'processing' built in and quite often these settings can be customised...sharpness is usually one of them (along with brightness, contrast, saturation etc). Might be worth checking the manual for your Canon to see how you go about doing this.

I could be completly wrong OG but in my humble opinion, you have not bought a duff camera, just an inferior one. I'm assuming that your Olympus OM10 was a proper SLR one with a decent lens to go with it. You would get some very good shots from it (i've seen plenty on the Greatest Looking Carp List... yawn ;)) but basically an S3IS is only a point & click camera. Sure it has various settings that you can use to improve your shot but it has one piece of glass on the end that would probably never match your original SLRs. Thats one reason why so many on here are switching to DSLRs from their old point and clicks, because you can get a very sharp, crisp shot from the different lenses available.

Oh and please don't take this as me knocking your Canon S3IS. I used one myself for many years and got some very good shots from it indeed, just not ofthe same quality achieved by a DSLR

Cheers Tutti , no problem, if im honest I'm never been entirely happy with it due to the picture quality.
DSLR? does this stand for Digital Single Lens Reflex.
Any idea's on what is a good DSLR, dont want to pay a fortune for one though.
Your right about the OM10, they were a very good camera in their day, Carl Zeiss lens, problem is that 90% of anglers run a mile when asked to take a photo with it.

OG... have a look at my fully scaled on The Greatest Looking Carp List and a few others i've put on this thread. These were taken with a Canon 450D with an 18-55mm kit lens. I suppose it's the same old adage in "you get what you pay for". A 450D second hand with that set up would probably be around 300 and a 400D maybe 50 less. There are others that will point you in the direction of some very reliable Nikons too. I think with the fish that you have been and i'm sure will continue to catch, you can justify the expense ;)

And As I learned from Darren, you can offset the border as I did below to make room for a caption.

Here in CS2 I went image/canvas size added 0.3cm width and height - colour white. Middle box selected.

Then image/canvas size added 1cm width and height - colour black. Middle box selected.

Then image/canvas size 0 width and added 2cm height - colour black. Top middle box selected.

(I wouldn't swear the dimensions are correct but it's trial and error)

Then I used white text for the caption
