Cracking pics Stu. Question for you from someone who knows close to zip about photography. How is that the moving car is pin-sharp yet the (stationery) foreground is blurred?

KWB
27-05-2014, 06:48
It's called panning - basically the cameras autofocus locks onto the car as you follow it through the frame, as a result the car is in focus and the track is blurred giving a sense of movement. Shutter speed comes into play here too, it's a fine balance between getting the car sharp and getting that sense of speed.

carp unit
27-05-2014, 07:49
Couldn't have put it better myself :)

You do end up with quite a few shots which are scrap due to them being blurry in the areas you want them to be sharp but as long as you get a number of keepers that's all that matters. I took just under 1400 shots filling 2 memory cards in a few hours. Having gone through them all and processed them I reckon I've got maybe 100 keepers. Considering I only have a fairly cheap lens for this kind of subject I'm relatively happy with that ratio. :)

Ah, the camera is moving to follow the car hence the blurred 'stationery' foreground, get it. Thanks chaps.

Is it called Bokeh? Something like that I think.

carp unit
27-05-2014, 09:29
Slightly different to bokeh, motion blur is achieved through the cameras movement (panning), whereas bokeh is achieved by using a shallow depth of field (low F number). Both are nice effects to make a shot look more interesting or appealing.

are you using you white balance on auto?, that makes a lot of difference to your colours when you set it to the actual conditions instead of lettin the camera work it out

WB is set on auto in camera but generally adjusted in Camera Raw, as a general rule.

Look particularly unsharp though, which is odd as sharpening has been applied and in iphoto they look much, much tighter.

Thanks by the way.
