Good advice, your lens is the most important piece of kit, don't skimp on it or you may live to regret it.
Think of the future, cameras come and go but you may keep your lens for ever.

How much should I be looking to spend on a good lens?

how long is a piece of string?!

Read some reviews before you go shelling out a few hundred on an 18-200.

You may find its a jack of all trades but master of none!

And lasty, don't always assume Canon make the be all and end all of lenses. There's some third party manufacturers that blow some of the Canon gear out of the water when you take into the cost.

I would say get a Canon EF 50mm F1.8 Prime Lens for your fish photography. The results that you can get are awesome. Probably around 60-100 quid for the Mark 2. Then look at getting a zoom lens for everything else.
