Prices are dropping nicely at the moment, they are almost as low as they were in Jan.

Id look at a 450D, its a great starter. About 450 with one lense.

450D or the Nikon D60, little to choose between the two. I went with the Nikon, preffered the way it felt in my hands and absolutely love it.

If your buying online always do a search for money off vouchers or voucher codes, I got 50 off my camera through Jessops with one.

In fact a good tip is before buying anything online is to do a search for voucher codes, you can get some good savings..........

It is and the 520 is a capable performer. There are pros and cons to the four thirds sysyem you might want to consider. Also the 520 has a bigger brother the 620 which is by far and away a better camera. Depends how much you want to spend.

A Nikon D60 body can be got currently at a very good price as it has been replaced by the D3000.

Nikon IMHO lead with DSLR whilst Canon have a far better range and choice of lenses. Olympus lens choice are more limited but their kit lenses are probably the best out there.

Tough call really. Any of the mid range consumer kits will probably serve you well, but it is worth handling them if you can because if you buy one and it does not feel right you will not want to use it.

One thing....camera bodies come and go usually about every 2 years. Lenses are for decades! Good money goes on glass. If you gave me 800 I would go with a Nikon D3000 and the 16-85 VR lens. This lens is a mid range high quality performer and image stabilised. 85mm in old money is just over 120mm so this lens delivers image quality, wide at 16 and is excellent at 60/70mm for people portrait shots.

good luck!
